In 1904 Frederick and Jette Meisenheimer arrive in America and end up in a small Missouri town. There they encounter a jazz trumpeter who cooks a mean gumbo; a promiscuous schoolteacher; a malevolent, bicyle-riding dwarf; and more. Years later, as their grandson, James, tells his ancestors' story, he comes to realize he doesn't know his own story at all.
